Acne is an eruption and disruption of the skin caused by localized inflammation of the skin that occurs when there is clogging of the skin pores by skin oils.  This leads to an over abundance of normally occurring skin bacteria called P. acnes.  This inflammation can lead to cystic changes in the skin as well as the typical blackhead and whitehead formations.    Acne is commonly seen in teens as hormonal production changes, but it is not uncommon in adults, especially during times of hormonal fluctuations. 

Treatment goals inolve reducing the number of bacteria present in the acne prone areas, by reducing oil production in the skin, along with a skin care regiment to clear and prevent further blockages of skin pores.

IPL treatment can add to the acne reduction by using a specific spectrum of light to target the P. acnes bacterium and oil glands of the skin.  Treatments are typically performed  weekly for 6 weeks.  Each session lasts about 15-20 minutes.  Most patients report improvement as early as three weeks into therapy.  Levulan, which is a medication applied prior to the IPL therapy can enhance results, by photo sensitiving the treatments areas.  It is essential to stay away from any direct sunlight for 48 hours following Levulan treatment, with daily sunscreen a must.
