The first signs of Spring are upon us, and as we anxiously wait for warmer weather and possibly a Spring get-a-way, we want to share some important skin care information.

Sunlight makes us all feel better and some of us pine for a glowing tan, but sun exposure and its damaging affects on skin are responsible for premature aging, wrinkles, “sun spots” and skin cancer.  At RENEU, we are not just committed to giving you beautiful skin, we are committed to giving you the healthiest skin possible!

Eighty percent of the signs of skin aging in adults are the result of the tans we had as teenagers.  That’s because over time, the sun’s ultraviolet light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin.  When these fibers breakdown, the skin begins to sag, stretch and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching.  Too much sun also causes irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin -- some areas appear darker, while others are lighter.  Sun also causes stretching of the blood vessels just under the skin, giving the skin a reddish appearance.  Feel like moving to Alaska?  Probably not, but those teenage suntans sure didn’t do us any favors.  Fortunately, at RENEU we have treatments to help reverse all the sun damage your skin has endured.  A complimentary consultation is the best way to start.  If treatment is necessary, we can set up a Custom Skin Renewal Package at 15% off the regular price.

Skin Cancer is the most common form of human cancer.  It is estimated that one million new cases occur annually and nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer. The good news is that 90% of these cancers can be prevented with proper skin protection and care! The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal.  Know your ABCDEs!

·  A is for Asymmetry:  Normal moles look symmetrical, or the same on
    both halves.
 · B is for Border:  If the edges of a mole are ragged or irregular, have it
    checked by your doctor.
 · C is for Color:  Normal moles are the same color thru out.  A mole that
    is changing in color, or has many colors thru out needs to be checked. 
 · D is for Diameter:  A mole is suspicious if the diameter is larger than
    the eraser of a pencil.
 · E is for Elevation:  A mole that is newly elevated, or raised above the skin,
    shrinking, evolving or itching should also be checked by a health
    professional. 

Prevention is key.  Sunscreen should be worn daily!  Even a short drive in the car can result in significant exposure.  If you need any proof of that, investigate both sides of your face -- chances are the left side of your face has more “age spots” or freckles.

When shopping for sunscreen, look for an SPF of at least 15 that protects against both UVA and UVB.  Make sure to use a water resistant product if you are exercising or in the water.  Reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours when you are outside.
